American Chestnut- Castanea dentata
Deciduous Tree
Zone: 3-8
Conservation Practices: H,E,F,N,T
Description: 100' timber tree. Nuts are sweet and great for wildlife food. Trees are best planted on a Northeast facing slope with full sun. Soils should be loosely packed like a sandy loam. Established trees are drought resistant. Seedlings are extremely fast growing. Two or more trees are needed to produce a nut crop.

Before the chestnut blight, 1904-1950, the American Chestnut tree was prevalent in the forests of the eastern United States. Their nuts provided food for humans and wildlife. The straight grained, light weight timber they provided was commonly found in the construction of homes, furniture and fences. A blight resistant strain has been and continues to be researched in several programs through out the United States. Our seed is harvested from mature healthy American Chestnut trees.
